Novak comes off as a rather self-absorbed literary type, but he leans into the trope in this film and it works on several levels. The Texas stuff plays stereotypes for laughs, all while the mystery of a woman's death hangs over everything. The final twist is somewhat obvious, but the final final twist is a shocker.
